PPM Disaster Response: Hurricane Hilary - Mexico & Southern California
Hurricane Hilary was recently categorized as a category 4 hurricane, as its windspeeds have surpassed 145 mph. It is expected to make landfall somewhere between Ensenada and Tijuana sometime on Sunday, August 20. The storm is already bringing heavy rains and winds to the Baja Peninsula and is the first storm of its kind in this in nearly 84 years. After passing through Mexico, it is expected to bring unprecedented rainfall to Southern California, where the storm has triggered the area's first-ever tropical storm watch.
We will be updating here as the storm approaches, providing updates from our staff and partners on the ground.
Please be praying for our partners in Baja California who are watching and preparing for this hurricane.
Updates From The Field
Pastor Reports from Ensenada
by Katrina Hulme | August 22, 2023 12:18 PM
It has been a few days since Tropical Storm Hilary passed through Baja California. Over the past two days, we have heard from all of our partners and local staff. Everyone is safe, and it continues to appear that the damage is minimal in Ensenada.
At least three of our partner pastors have reported water leaks in their church buildings due to the intense rain. In the community of Maneadero, on the edge of Ensenada, there is still some flooding. Pastors and staff are checking in with their church congregations to determine any other immediate needs.
Thank you for praying with us over our beloved partners in Ensenada, and praise God for His faithfulness!
Updates from Ensenada
by Katrina Hulme | August 20, 2023 8:28 PM
Today, after downgrading to a tropical storm, Hilary passed slightly east of Ensenada. The storm brought a few hours of heavy rain and minor flooding in some streets within Ensenada. Some areas also experienced mudslides. However, the early reports are showing minimal damage or effects from the storm.
We are thanking God for His protection over our partners and staff in Ensenada so far, and we continue to pray for other parts of Mexico who are experiencing heavy flooding. We will continue to monitor the effects of the storm and support our partners in Ensenada as they respond to any needs.
Preparing for the storm
by Annie Bost | August 19, 2023 9:46 AM
As the Ensenada area is anticipating the first band of rain from Hurricane Hilary today, our local staff has been busy preparing with our host partner churches. As this kind of storm is extremely rare in this area, many have been unsure how to best get themselves and their property ready. Our staff has been contacting each partner to walk them through basic ways that their communities can prepare for the rain and winds to come.
Please continue to join with us in prayer for all who are in the path of the storm.
Hurricane Hilary Headed to Baja California
by Katrina Hulme | August 18, 2023 4:43 PM
We are asking for your prayers as Hurricane Hilary is strengthening in the Pacific Ocean. The storm´s current path is heading for Ensenada, where we have many PPM partner pastors. The storm will bring heavy rain & winds, which could lead to flooding & mudslides. This kind of storm is uncommon in the area, so we are working hard to ensure that our partners are prepared.
Please join us in praying for our partners, staff, and their families.
